Tengizchevroil: industry on the ground
Output reached a record 27.1 million tonnes of oil in 2013 and about 30 million tonnes in 2019, showing a large continuous process operation with extensive classified areas.
Chevron describes Tengiz as the world's deepest producing supergiant oil field, with the top of the reservoir roughly 13,000 feet, or about 4,000 metres, below ground. First oil from its Future Growth Project Third-Generation Plant came in January 2025. Buyers searching for an explosion proof smartphone supplier for Tengizchevroil can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof smartphone for Tengizchevroil cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kazakhstan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Where it operates and the kinds of classified area a handset would meet there.
TCO's procurement favours qualified Kazakhstani contractors (over 1,250 contracts awarded to local firms on the Future Growth Project); confirm current supplier requirements with TCO. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

The joint venture was formed in April 1993, when the Kazakh government granted it exclusive 40-year development rights, so it is a long-established operation with mature site procedures.
Because the venture is operated for international partners, supplier access normally runs through its own approved-contractor and HSE induction process rather than a general national register; confirm current rules with its procurement team.
The company is reported to employ about 4,000 people, around 95% of them residents of Kazakhstan, which makes local-language training and instructions important for any new equipment.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Tengizchevroil. In a large crude oil production plant, explosion-proof is a casual label for different concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed electrical enclosures, while intrinsic safety limits electrical energy and suits handheld devices. For operators moving through the Tengiz plants and wellsites with a phone, intrinsic safety is the relevant concept, and the IS-04Z1 is designed around it.
Nothing can be bought for Tengizchevroil today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
TCO's procurement favours qualified Kazakhstani contractors (over 1,250 contracts awarded to local firms on the Future Growth Project); confirm current supplier requirements with TCO.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Continental climates around the north Caspian typically bring very cold winters and hot, dusty summers. For handheld devices this means checking operating temperature range, battery behaviour in cold, and ingress protection against dust. Confirm the site's temperature limits with the operator.
Tengiz is a large Caspian oil field, and sour hydrocarbon handling is common in such operations, so gas-detection and hazardous-area discipline matter. Whether specific areas are classified Zone 1 or Zone 2 is decided per installation, so confirm each work area's classification with the operator.
Its procurement is reported to favour qualified Kazakhstani contractors, with many contracts awarded to local firms on its Future Growth Project. A foreign manufacturer would normally work through local partners. Ask the company for current supplier requirements; the IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet and SAMS has appointed no distributor.
