OGDCL: industry on the ground
The Qadirpur field, discovered in 1990, is the third-largest gas field in Pakistan, and its membrane gas-processing plant was expanded in 2004 from 235 to 400 million cubic feet a day of sales gas.
The company began as the Oil & Gas Development Corporation in 1961; its first well, at Toot on the Potwar Plateau, started drilling in November 1964, and it became a public limited company in 1997. It operates around 50 oil and gas fields and several processing plants. Buyers searching for an explosion proof smartphone supplier for OGDCL can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof smartphone for OGDCL cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Pakistan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

OGDCL publishes tenders and enlistment documents for suppliers and contractors on ogdcl.com; applicants must be on the active taxpayer list and may be visited for premises checks. Confirm current requirements with its procurement team. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
The Qadirpur field, discovered in 1990, is the third-largest gas field in Pakistan, and its membrane gas-processing plant was expanded in 2004 from 235 to 400 million cubic feet a day of sales gas.
Its fields include the Qadirpur and Uch gas fields and the Kunnar Pasakhi Deep field, and it operates the Nashpa exploration licence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, so operations span Sindh, Punjab and the north-west.
OGDCL is Pakistan's largest hydrocarbon producer, with 18 processing plants and operations in about 50 oil and gas fields, so a single operator covers a wide range of field and plant sites.
OGDCL opened the Tando Alam oil field in Hyderabad District in May 1984 and found the Pasakhi field in the same district in 1989, showing its long presence in southern Sindh.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In OGDCL. For wellheads, compression facilities and LPG recovery plants, the everyday term explosion-proof can hide two different approaches. Flameproof Ex d contains an internal explosion in a heavy enclosure. Intrinsic safety limits electrical and thermal energy so a handheld cannot ignite gas. A phone relies on the second, and the target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
Nothing can be bought for OGDCL today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.
Tell us the site, zone, gas group and quantity so the right authorised distributor can contact you.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Typical uses are well sites, gathering stations and gas processing plants such as Qadirpur, where flammable gas areas are common. Classification is set per installation, so ask OGDCL's HSE team for area classification drawings and its rules on portable electronics before specifying devices.
Operators in Pakistan commonly accept recognised international explosive-atmosphere certificates such as IECEx or ATEX, and may apply their own specifications as well. Confirm with OGDCL which certificates and any local approval it requires before supplying handheld devices.
The IS-04Z1 is designed for intrinsically safe handheld use, with IP68 dust and water protection and a 4,000 mAh battery. Remote pads can be hot, dusty and far from charging points, so battery planning matters. The final certificate will define limits. Confirm the area classification with the site operator.
