EGAS: projects and investment
The Zohr gas field, found in 2015 about 190 km north of Port Said, is estimated to hold around 30 trillion cubic feet of gas, and production began in December 2017.
Egypt's Damietta and Idku LNG plants, operated by Egyptian LNG and SEGAS LNG, make the country a supplier to international gas markets and are major coastal cryogenic sites. It works under the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, oversees exploration agreements in Mediterranean and Nile Delta concessions, and manages gas grid, LNG and regasification activity. This page sets out how an explosion proof smartphone supply route to EGAS will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof smartphone for EGAS cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Egypt. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

EGAS publishes supplier registration forms and guides, and an LNG supplier register with published criteria, on its website (egas.com.eg); confirm current procedures with EGAS directly. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

EGAS is responsible for issuing natural gas exploration licences in Egypt, so offshore and onshore gas bid rounds run through it rather than through the operating companies.
Gas imports began in April 2015, with regasification supplying the national grid, after domestic consumption reached about the same level as production, so import terminals form part of the system.
In 2014 and 2015 EGAS signed six agreements covering three offshore areas in the Mediterranean and three onshore areas in the Nile Delta, and launched a bidding round for twelve offshore blocks.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In EGAS. In gas plants and LNG facilities, 'explosion-proof' is everyday shorthand for different concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed equipment, while intrinsic safety limits the energy of a portable device. A phone used at a transmission station or tank farm is a handheld, so the IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety.
Supply of the IS-04Z1 to EGAS starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
EGAS publishes supplier registration forms and guides, and an LNG supplier register with published criteria, on its website (egas.com.eg); confirm current procedures with EGAS directly.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Egypt's gas and oil sites range from humid Mediterranean coast and Nile Delta locations to hot, dusty desert areas. For handheld devices check dust and water ingress protection, high temperature rating and corrosion resistance, and confirm each site's own environmental requirements.
EGAS is a holding company that owns state stakes and issues licences, so day-to-day equipment purchases are normally made by the operating companies and joint ventures that run each field or plant. Identify the operator of the site and ask its procurement and HSE teams for requirements.
EGAS publishes supplier registration forms and guides, and an LNG supplier register with published criteria, on egas.com.eg. Procedures change, so confirm them with EGAS directly. The IS-04Z1 is in certification and has no certificate, which any registration must state honestly.
