Greece: industry on the ground
Renewables and hydropower rose from over 20% to around 50% of electricity generation since 2015, while lignite fell from 60% in 2005 to about 10% in 2021.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for refinery rounds in the Attica heat, gas terminal work at Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis, and the cargo and bunker operations that run out of Piraeus. If you are specifying an explosion proof smartphone for Greece, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Greece: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Greece. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Operators and classified areas drawn from the SAMS Greece market guide.
Renewables and hydropower rose from over 20% to around 50% of electricity generation since 2015, while lignite fell from 60% in 2005 to about 10% in 2021.
The 213 km Thessaloniki-Skopje pipeline resumed operations at the beginning of 2026 after a 13-year suspension, so product pipeline terminals are active again at both ends.
A 390 MW natural gas power station in Thessaloniki opened in 2005 and is run by a subsidiary, adding gas-fired power to the refinery complex.
HelleniQ Energy operated 1,475 service stations in Greece in 2026, so fuel forecourts with classified areas are spread across the mainland and islands.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Greece. Explosion-proof is the everyday phrase in Greece, yet refinery rounds, tank farms and gas terminals call for different protection concepts. Flameproof Ex d suits some fixed equipment; intrinsic safety suits a carried handset. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety for Zone 1 and Zone 21 work at refineries, terminals and quaysides.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
The market guide for Greece covers Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Agioi Theodoroi, Thessaloniki, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Mainland refineries are reachable by road, but islands depend on ferry or air freight and timetables vary by season. Order spare batteries and chargers early, and confirm with the operator whether devices must be registered before shipment to the site.
Hot summers and direct sun can push device temperatures up, which affects battery safety and display visibility. Check the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate, and avoid leaving devices on hot surfaces. Offshore and island sites also add salt air that can affect connectors.
Shipyards and refineries may follow different regimes and have different zone definitions. A device would need a marking suitable for each area it enters. Ask each operator or yard authority what evidence and permits they require before carrying a handset in.
