Suncor: industry on the ground
The Sarnia refinery in Ontario is listed at 85,000 barrels a day, so Ontario's Chemical Valley area is also part of Suncor's downstream footprint.
Suncor is a Calgary-based integrated energy company specialising in synthetic crude from oil sands. Suncor's 2009 merger with Petro-Canada created a combined company worth about C$43.3 billion, and in October 2023 it bought TotalEnergies' Canadian operations for C$1.47 billion. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof smartphone for Suncor, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Suncor: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Canada. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Where it operates and the kinds of classified area a handset would meet there.
Prospective suppliers complete an intake form on Suncor's website; if capabilities match its needs they may be contacted for registration and pre-qualification, and high-volume goods suppliers may be asked to transact on SAP Ariba Network. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

In fall 2021 Suncor took over operatorship of the Syncrude joint venture and holds a majority stake of 58.74%, making Syncrude a Suncor-run site with its own contractor base.
Suncor was formed in 1979 when Sun Oil merged its Canadian refining, retail and conventional oil businesses with Great Canadian Oil Sands, whose plant began production in 1967 as the first commercial Athabasca oil sands development.
Upstream work covers Western Canada, Colorado and offshore eastern Canada, with international offshore developments in the North Sea, so equipment may need to meet different national regimes.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Suncor. At oil sands extraction and upgrading units and at refineries, people use 'explosion-proof' loosely. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed motors and enclosures, while intrinsic safety limits what a portable device can release. A phone carried on rounds at Sarnia or Firebag is a handheld, which is why the IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typical areas are refinery process units and tank farms at Edmonton, Sarnia and Montreal, the oil sands upgrader near Fort McMurray and Syncrude's process plants. Mines and offices are usually unclassified. Zoning is decided per site, so ask for area classification drawings first.
Winters in northern Alberta can be very cold and summers short and warm, so battery capacity, touchscreen response with gloves and condensation are practical concerns. Check the rated operating range and ask each site for its cold-weather work rules.
The classification documents differ by site, so compare the marking with each one. Oil sands units and refineries such as Edmonton or Sarnia may use Zones or Divisions. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet and its target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Confirm with Suncor's HSE team.
