Great Yarmouth
The port, owned by Peel Ports since 2015, services the southern North Sea oil and gas sector and has an offshore energy operations and maintenance campus funded by Norfolk County Council.
Norwich is the county town of Norfolk, lying on the River Wensum about 100 miles north-east of London and 65 miles east of Peterborough, and is the largest settlement in East Anglia. Nearby hazardous-area work centres on the Bacton gas terminal complex on the north Norfolk coast, which receives North Sea gas, and the offshore energy port at Great Yarmouth. An explosion proof smartphone distributor in Norwich and the Norfolk coast would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Norwich and the Norfolk coast has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Norwich. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
The port, owned by Peel Ports since 2015, services the southern North Sea oil and gas sector and has an offshore energy operations and maintenance campus funded by Norfolk County Council.
Bacton is a complex of six gas terminals operated by Shell, Eni, Perenco and National Grid, plus the Interconnector and BBL terminals linking to continental Europe.
NHV Helicopter Services has operated from Norwich since 2008, mainly carrying passengers on daily offshore oil and gas flights with AW139 aircraft from its terminal at the Klyne Business Aviation Centre.
Regional industry bodies have described the offshore wind supply chain in East Anglia as a growing cluster, with ScottishPower Renewables and Vattenfall wind farms off the coast driving demand for coastal contractors.
Norwich Airport is home to major offshore energy helicopter transport operations alongside corporate and general aviation and the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and KLM Engineering runs six maintenance bays across three hangars there.
The Norwich City Council area had an estimated population of about 144,000, so engineers and technicians are drawn from a sizeable local labour pool as well as from the wider county.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Norwich and the Norfolk coast. At a gas terminal, 'explosion-proof' concerns equipment near gas receipt, blending and process areas. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed items such as motors, while intrinsic safety suits a handheld used by operators on rounds. Each terminal operator, whether Shell, Eni, Perenco or National Grid, chooses the concept for its own areas.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Norwich and the Norfolk coast. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are gas terminal process areas, gas receipt and blending, interconnector terminals, offshore support port facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Norwich and the Norfolk coast.
The Norfolk coast is relatively dry by UK standards but exposed to wind and salt air, which can corrode connectors and fixings. For offshore wind and port work, look for good ingress protection and corrosion resistance, and ask the site about its own requirements.
Norwich is mainly a service, research and distribution city, so most classified areas lie on the coast, around the energy port at Great Yarmouth, gas terminals and offshore wind and gas support bases, as well as in fuel depots and food or feed plants. Confirm the site classification with each operator.
Bacton is a complex of six gas terminals run by Shell, Eni, Perenco and National Grid, plus the Interconnector and BBL terminals. Equipment for terminal areas is normally approved by each terminal operator, so approvals may differ between neighbouring sites. Ask each operator for its own requirements.
