Monsoon climate
Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate with intense rain from June to September, so outdoor devices need good water and corrosion protection.
BPCL's Mumbai refinery was described in 2014 as having a capacity of 12 million tonnes a year, with a new 6 million tonne distillation unit replacing older units. Refining, petroleum terminals and chemical plants create Zone 1 areas, and crude arrives from offshore fields such as Mumbai High. Distribution partners for Mumbai, Maharashtra are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Mumbai, Maharashtra has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Mumbai India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Mumbai has a tropical wet and dry climate with intense rain from June to September, so outdoor devices need good water and corrosion protection.
The refineries sit in the Mahul-Chembur area within the metropolitan region, which Wikipedia notes is surrounded by a number of chemical plants, so site access and security controls are normally strict.
Mumbai's industrialisation after the 1960s expanded petrochemicals, electronics and automobiles, and major refineries such as the Mumbai Refinery at Trombay and the BPCL refinery were established.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Institute of Chemical Technology are among the major engineering schools, giving a strong local pool of chemical and process engineers.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Navi Mumbai, opened in 1989, has surpassed a capacity of 4 million TEU of containers, with 30 container freight stations and links to 52 inland container depots.
The port is the terminal of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, which is expected to raise rail capacity from 27 to 100 trains a day.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Mumbai, Maharashtra. Older refineries such as those in Mumbai combine decades of installed equipment with newer units. In that setting, explosion-proof can mean different protection concepts on different plant. A handheld used on rounds depends on intrinsic safety, not on a flameproof enclosure like fixed motors.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Mumbai, Maharashtra yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petroleum storage terminals, marine oil handling, chemical plants. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Mumbai has refineries in the Trombay area, including the Mumbai Refinery and BPCL's refinery. Each operator has its own access and equipment rules, so confirm with the specific site.
The Telecommunication Engineering Centre has a regional centre in Mumbai that carries out tests and issues service test certificates. Ask your supplier which certification applies to your specific handset.
Site access and security controls around the Mahul-Chembur area are normally strict. Devices may be logged or inspected at the gate, and contractors may need induction. Confirm with the site operator what documentation a new device needs before it can enter.
