Chile: rules and approvals
The SUBTEL application goes through a local legal representative, FCC or CE test reports are typically accepted, and SUBTEL does not currently mandate a compliance label.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Chile every shift: copper and lithium plant operators in the Atacama, refinery crews at Concón, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. SUBTEL approves radio and telecom devices in Chile, including mobile phones, and approval is needed before importation and sale of any product using radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or telecom networks. An explosion proof smartphone distributor in Chile would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Chile has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

SEC certifies listed electrical products, which must carry the SEC mark, and certificates remain valid while the design is unchanged, though SEC may audit products already on the market.
Mining accounts for about 14 per cent of GDP, or around 20 per cent including linked activity, and about 3 per cent of the workforce works directly in mines and quarries.
Chile's customs service works with SUBTEL and SEC, and non-certified products in mandatory categories can be held at the border, so importers should carry certificates and technical documents.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Chile. Explosion proof is the everyday phrase, but in the Atacama the dominant hazard is fine mineral dust rather than flammable gas. Flameproof Ex d is one route for fixed equipment; the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, limiting energy for a handheld at a concentrator or ENAP refinery. The operator classifies the areas, not SAMS.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Chile yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Northern mining districts are arid, with strong sun, large day-night temperature swings and fine dust, and many sites are at altitude. Check the operating temperature range, dust ingress rating and battery performance, and confirm any altitude or site-specific limits with the operator.
Yes. SERNAGEOMIN is the national geology and mining service, and it works alongside the Ministry of Mining and other bodies. Mining sites therefore follow mining safety rules in addition to electrical requirements, so ask the mine's compliance team which rules apply to portable devices underground and on the surface.
No: Codelco and the major private miners each run vendor-registration and engineering-approval processes, so a device can be SEC-cleared yet unlisted on an operator's equipment register. SEC and Subtel approvals are being pursued and are not finished. Confirm the registration route with the operator before purchase.
