EGPC: who works there
EGPC owns 70% of the Egyptian Natural Gas Company and 75% of Petroleum Air Services, with the remaining 25% held by Bristow Group, which supports remote and offshore crew transport.
In the Western Desert, operating companies such as Khalda Petroleum and Qarun Petroleum are joint ventures between EGPC and an international operator, so desert field rules often follow the joint-venture company. It covers exploration, refining and storage, and nearly all of Egypt's refining companies are its subsidiaries. This page sets out how an explosion proof mobile phone supply route to EGPC will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof mobile phone for EGPC cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Egypt. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
EGPC owns 70% of the Egyptian Natural Gas Company and 75% of Petroleum Air Services, with the remaining 25% held by Bristow Group, which supports remote and offshore crew transport.
EGPC was established in 1956 in Cairo as the General Petroleum Authority and was renamed the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation in 1962, so it is a long-standing state body.
A 2024 programme announced solar power stations of 6.5 MW at EGPC and 10 MW at the Assiut Oil Refining Company, showing refinery and head-office sites are adding on-site generation.
EGPC's refineries page lists Alexandria Petroleum, Amreya, Suez Oil Refining, Nasr, Cairo Oil Refining (Mostorod and Tanta), Assiut, MIDOR, AMOC and ANRPC.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In EGPC. In EGPC refineries, 'explosion-proof' is a casual phrase for several concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed motors and enclosures in process units, while intrinsic safety limits the energy of a portable device. A phone carried through a refinery is a handheld, so the IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety.
There is no stock to order for EGPC yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
EGPC is the state parent corporation, but day-to-day operation is usually carried out by its subsidiaries and by joint-venture operating companies. Equipment requirements therefore depend on the specific refinery or field company, so identify the operating company and ask its procurement and HSE teams.
Western Desert sites are hot, dry and dusty, while Suez Gulf and Mediterranean sites are humid with salt air. For handheld devices look for high temperature rating, dust and water ingress protection and corrosion resistance, and confirm each operator's environmental requirements.
Not necessarily. Each refinery, such as El-Nasr, Mostorod or Assiut, has its own process units and classification documents, so compare the marking with the one for the exact site. The IS-04Z1 is not yet certified. Confirm with EGPC's procurement and HSE teams.
