Marine access
Reliance states that its marine infrastructure takes vessels from small chemical carriers to very large crude carriers.
Jamnagar, on the Gulf of Kutch coast in Gujarat, hosts Reliance Industries' refining complex at Motikhavdi, which Reliance describes as the world's largest single-site refinery at 1.4 million barrels a day. Jamnagar has a hot semi-arid climate, with March to May extremely hot and humid and an erratic monsoon averaging about 500 millimetres, from under 100 in dry years to over 1,500. If you are specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for Jamnagar, Gujarat, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Jamnagar, Gujarat: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Jamnagar India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Reliance states that its marine infrastructure takes vessels from small chemical carriers to very large crude carriers.
Wikipedia quotes 1.24 million barrels a day, while Reliance's current site quotes 1.4 million; the operator's figure is used here.
The Jamnagar refinery, owned by Reliance Industries, was commissioned in July 1999 at 668,000 barrels a day and now has an installed capacity of 1.24 million barrels a day, the largest of any single refinery.
Polymer exports from the Jamnagar complex were moved through Port Pipavav by container, with volumes quadrupled to over 10,000 forty-foot containers in one year.
A second large refinery is at nearby Vadinar and is owned by Nayara Energy, described as India's second-largest single-site refinery.
Tropical cyclones sometimes affect the area during the wet season, so operators plan for storm events.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Jamnagar, Gujarat. At a refinery with petcoke gasification, an off-gas cracker and large tank farms, explosion-proof covers many concepts. Fixed motors and junction boxes may be flameproof Ex d, while a handheld carried through units and tank farms relies on intrinsic safety. The area type decides which concept is acceptable.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petcoke gasification, refinery off-gas cracker and petrochemical units, crude and product tank farms. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Vadinar is a separate coastal town in Devbhumi Dwarka district with its own refinery and crude oil terminals, about 47 kilometres from Jamnagar airport. Many contractors serve both sites, but access arrangements are separate.
It is hot semi-arid, with a very hot and humid season from March to May and an irregular monsoon. Cyclones occasionally occur, so look for sealed devices with a suitable temperature range.
Not automatically. The complex has many unit types, and each area has its own classification and permit regime. A device may be acceptable in one and not in another. Confirm with Reliance's site safety team which areas an approved handheld may be used in.
