Helwan cement
Helwan Cement began operating in 1929 and has about 4 million tonnes per year of capacity; a USD 30 million waste heat recovery plant was announced.
Cairo is a city rather than a single industrial site; the hazardous-area sites are in its surroundings. Natural gas made up 84% of Egypt's electricity mix in 2023, and Egypt produced 45% of Africa's gas-fired electricity in 2022, so gas-fired power stations and gas networks are the backbone of the national grid. If you are specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for Greater Cairo, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Greater Cairo: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

About 46 km from Cairo, it is reported to host 5,083 factories and around 353,656 jobs across electronics, food, pharmaceuticals, plastics, steel and other sectors.
Cairo International Airport in Heliopolis, about 15 km from the business district, covers roughly 37 square kilometres and is the busiest airport in Egypt, which helps urgent spares and visiting engineers reach the capital.
Helwan, in southern Cairo, is the city's largest industrial centre, with iron and steel, cement and vehicle factories that developed into a major steelworks zone during the 1960s.
The Cairo Metro opened in 1987, is the oldest metro system in Africa and has over 1 billion passenger rides a year, so underground and railway systems are a major source of civil and electrical work.
Egypt's national oil company is the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, and Egypt has the sixth-largest proved oil reserves in Africa, over half of them offshore.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Greater Cairo. Around Greater Cairo, explosion-proof is used loosely for refinery equipment, kiln fuel areas and factory solvent areas. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed equipment; a handheld phone uses intrinsic safety. The difference matters most at the refinery's process units and fuel storage, where the operator classifies each area.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel storage, cement kiln fuel areas, factory solvent and gas areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, Cairo is hot in summer, dusty and polluted, so check the dust ingress rating, the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate and the sealing of ports and charging contacts. Regular cleaning of connectors and spare batteries are practical for long outdoor shifts.
Equipment typically arrives through Cairo airport or Egyptian ports and is cleared through customs before onward road or rail transport. Allow for traffic and customs time, check radio-equipment import rules and confirm who receives and stores devices at the site.
Not necessarily. A refinery has hydrocarbon process units and storage, a cement plant has kiln fuel areas, and factories may have solvent or gas areas. Each operator sets its own classification and approval route. Request zone and gas group data from each site before assuming one device suits all.
