Workforce
SSAB's Borlänge site employs around 1,800 people and is being developed as a processing and distribution hub as SSAB moves to new production processes.
Borlänge is the largest urban centre in Dalarna, central Sweden, and is built around the SSAB Domnarvet strip-steel works and the Stora Enso Kvarnsveden paper mill. SSAB's industrial area lies in downtown Borlänge, the Dal river flows through the site, and the works contain around 30 km of railroad track. If you are specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for Borlänge, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Borlänge: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Borlänge. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Large works run their own contractor induction and permit-to-work systems, so access to classified areas is arranged through each operator.
Borlänge has long been an industrial town around the Domnarvet iron and steel works, now SSAB, and the Kvarnsveden paper mill, owned by Stora Enso.
Construction of the Domnarvet ironworks began in 1872, and a railway between Falun and Ludvika via Borlänge opened in 1875, making the town a strategic junction for the works.
The town lies on the Dalälven river downstream of the confluence of the Österdalälven and Västerdalälven, and it is the largest urban centre in the province of Dalarna, with about 44,900 residents in 2020.
SSAB describes its Borlänge works, established in 1878, as its largest strip rolling system, making hot-rolled and cold-rolled high-strength steel for automotive, heavy-duty transport, lifting and container uses, with around 1,700 employees.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Borlänge. In everyday talk at a steelworks or paper mill, explosion-proof often covers every protection concept. Here the real choice is between flameproof enclosures, Ex d, on fixed plant and intrinsic safety on portable devices. Fuel and process gas systems and dust areas each need their own assessment, so ask which concept the operator expects.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are fuel and process gas systems, chemical and oil storage, dust-generating process areas (zone 21). Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Inland Dalarna can be cold in winter, so batteries and touchscreens may perform less well outdoors. Typically users keep spare batteries warm and check the device's rated temperature range against site conditions, while mills and steelworks may require protective cases.
Mills typically have combustible dust from wood and fibre, flammable gases in energy and chemical recovery areas, and solvent stores. Each site classifies its own areas, so ask the mill's safety team for zone drawings and whether handheld devices are permitted.
Large works here run their own contractor induction and permit-to-work systems, so access to classified areas is arranged through each operator. A phone would normally be listed and approved as part of that process. Ask the operator's HSE or procurement team what device evidence it requires.
