Qatar: climate and equipment wear
Qatar is flat, dry desert with about 70 millimetres of rain a year, mild winters and summers that often reach 40 degrees Celsius.
More than 80 percent of Qatar's inhabitants live in Doha, while the industrial cities of Ras Laffan, 80 km north, and Mesaieed, 36 km south, are separate sites administered by QatarEnergy. Launch is Q4 2026, so today we can share the specification, the certification schedule and an evaluation unit. Buyers searching for an Ex-proof smartphone supplier for Qatar can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An Ex-proof smartphone for Qatar cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Qatar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Qatar is flat, dry desert with about 70 millimetres of rain a year, mild winters and summers that often reach 40 degrees Celsius.
Hamad Port, south of Doha near Mesaieed, became operational in December 2016 and is Qatar's main seaport, carrying largely food and building materials.
Mesaieed was established in 1949 as a tanker terminal and was Qatar's only deepwater port for more than 20 years; it is 36 km south of Doha.
Ras Laffan Industrial City, 80 km north of Doha, is Qatar's main site for liquefied natural gas and gas-to-liquids, hosting Pearl GTL, ORYX GTL, QatarEnergy LNG plants and the Laffan Refinery.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Qatar. A marking check in Qatar compares II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 with the plant classification, and the instrumentation group will read that line first. Ammonia, urea and polymer handling at Mesaieed place combustible dust beside flammable vapour, so the Zone 21 target is relevant. Gas group and temperature class need confirming.
There is no stock to order for Qatar yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
The market guide for Qatar covers Ras Laffan Industrial City, Mesaieed Industrial Area, North Field, Dukhan, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Industrial cities typically have gate and permit systems run by their administration and plant operators. Contractors normally need sponsorship and induction, so ask your host.
Ras Laffan Industrial City in the north for LNG, gas-to-liquids and refining, and Mesaieed Industrial City in the south, a prime industrial zone and tanking centre. Both are administered by QatarEnergy subsidiaries.
The radio inside the handset needs separate CRA type approval, and conformity for the imported product is administered by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Both sit inside the launch programme and neither has been granted. Confirm with the site operator which evidence is needed before bringing a device in.
