Sweden: projects and investment
Preem has announced plans, still in progress, to expand its refinery at Lysekil, which indicates continuing construction and maintenance work on the west coast.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for refinery and cracker rounds on the west coast, mill and recovery boiler areas inland, and winter shifts in the north where a device is handled through two layers of glove. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof smartphone for Sweden, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Sweden: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sweden. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Preem has announced plans, still in progress, to expand its refinery at Lysekil, which indicates continuing construction and maintenance work on the west coast.
In 2023, 98% of Swedish electricity generation came from renewables and nuclear, and over 20% of generation was exported to the rest of Europe, so hydro and nuclear sites dominate electricity work.
Sweden had the EU's highest share of renewable energy for heating and cooling at 69% in 2022, so biomass boilers and district heating plants with combustible dust are common.
Preem sells fuels, heating oil and lubricating oils to companies and individuals in Sweden and Norway, and since 2026 its parent company has been part of VARO Energy, so site procedures may follow the new group.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Sweden. A Swedish marking check reads II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 for the refinery and cracker areas, with the hydrogen projects at the steelmakers in mind. In the mill sector, wood dust is a primary hazard, so Zone 21 evidence is read as closely as the gas marking, and the lower limit of the ambient range is checked.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Sweden is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings. Refineries such as Lysekil typically add their own permit and device registration rules, so ask the HSE office.
Swedish is the working language but English is widely used at international industrial sites. ATEX instructions are typically expected in the language of the destination country, so confirm with the operator whether Swedish documents are needed. Bring the declaration of conformity and certificate.
A rugged build covers low temperature and thermal shock, but the certified ambient range is a certificate parameter, published with the datasheet. Certification is in progress. Check the lower limit against the coldest conditions at the mine or steelworks before specifying.
