Norway: background
Statoil built petrochemical processing plants at Rafnes and, with Norsk Hydro, at Mongstad in 1980, and became operator on the Gullfaks field in 1981, the first Norwegian company to do so.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, from a wet deck in the northern North Sea to a winter round on the Barents coast. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof smartphone for Norway, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Norway: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Norway. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Norway market guide.
Statoil built petrochemical processing plants at Rafnes and, with Norsk Hydro, at Mongstad in 1980, and became operator on the Gullfaks field in 1981, the first Norwegian company to do so.
North Sea oil was discovered in Norwegian waters in the late 1960s, and oil and gas exports have since become a central part of the Norwegian economy, with a mature and well-developed offshore supply chain.
Mongstad in Vestland county has Norway's largest refinery at about 12 million tonnes of crude a year, a crude terminal with 9.5 million barrels of storage, and Norway's biggest port by tonnage.
Most of Norway's electricity is generated by hydroelectric plants, so dams, tunnels and power stations are a separate type of industrial site alongside oil and gas.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Norway. A marking check in Norway compares II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 with the operator's classification. Gas on the shelf and at the onshore plants is the Zone 1 case, and the IIC group covers hydrogen. Dust belongs to the same programme, which matters in Grenland, where a fertiliser plant puts a powder area metres from a gas one.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Winters are cold and offshore conditions are wet, windy and salt-laden, so check the lowest rated ambient temperature, the water ingress rating and touch operation with gloves. Cold reduces battery capacity, so spare batteries and warm storage are typically recommended.
Stavanger is the headquarters of Equinor and a hub for offshore supply, while processing plants such as Mongstad and Rafnes were built by Statoil and Norsk Hydro. Gas terminals and refineries are along the west coast. Confirm current operations with the operator.
Android 16 with EMM and MDM is designed so a device can be wiped, re-enrolled and reissued to the incoming crew, including from the beach before the helicopter. Your own telecoms policy decides how that is done, so agree the process with your IT team before deployment.
