Tropical climate
Hot and humid all year with about 2,350 mm of annual rain, concentrated in the monsoon periods.
Rail from the city to Woodlands in Singapore was built in the 1880s and 1890s, the Peninsula railway extension finished in 1909, and the Causeway opened in 1923, so cross-border links are long established. Heavy industry sits at Pasir Gudang, home to Johor Port with a liquid terminal, and further east at the Pengerang complex, so Zone 1 work is outside the city centre. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof smartphone for Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Johor Bahru. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Hot and humid all year with about 2,350 mm of annual rain, concentrated in the monsoon periods.
The Pasir Gudang estate covers about 8,000 acres and houses petrochemical, engineering and other industries, away from the city core.
The city forms Zone A of Iskandar Malaysia, the country's largest special economic zone by investment value, and is part of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle.
Johor Bahru has an equatorial climate with steady temperatures, daily averages between about 26 and 28 degrees Celsius, high humidity all year, around 2,350 mm of rain a year and no cyclones.
Local industries include plastic manufacturing, electrical and electronics and food processing, so the city is a base for factory and warehouse work, while the heavy petrochemical sites lie further out in Johor.
The Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, in the Pengerang municipality of Johor, is described as the largest petrochemical complex in Malaysia and a major petrochemical hub internationally.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang. At a port liquid bulk terminal, an oleochemical plant or a Pengerang process unit, a marking check reads zone, gas group and temperature class on the label and compares them with the plant's own classification. Petrochemical sites can involve hydrogen or ethylene, so a IIC target such as II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 would be checked.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are port liquid bulk terminals, petrochemical and oleochemical plants, refinery and petrochemical process units (pengerang), fuel and chemical storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The best known is the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, a large petrochemical hub in southeast Johor, and there are other industrial estates across the district. Each operator classifies its own plant, so ask for zone drawings and device rules before bringing handheld equipment.
Pengerang has been a municipal council since January 2020, after becoming a local authority in 2017, within Kota Tinggi District of Johor. Plant access is controlled by each operator, so check both the municipal and plant-level induction requirements.
Rain is concentrated in the monsoon periods and humidity stays high all year. IP68 is designed to cope with water and dust, but it does not provide explosion protection. Check the certified ambient range and keep the device dry in charging areas. Ask the plant about its portable device rules.
