Complex refinery
CPCL's Manali refinery is rated at 10.5 million tonnes a year and includes crude distillation, hydrocracker, FCC, delayed coker and reforming units, plus lube and wax production.
Chennai's hazardous-area work centres on North Chennai, where Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) runs the Manali refinery and Kamarajar Port (Ennore) handles liquid and gas cargoes. Refining, lube and wax production and LNG handling create Zone 1 areas. Distribution partners for Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area) are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Chennai India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

CPCL's Manali refinery is rated at 10.5 million tonnes a year and includes crude distillation, hydrocracker, FCC, delayed coker and reforming units, plus lube and wax production.
Kamarajar Port, about 18 km north of Chennai Port, has a marine liquid terminal for petroleum, oils and chemicals and an Indian Oil LNG import terminal of 5 million tonnes a year.
India's Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation administers the Petroleum Rules of 2002 and the Explosives Rules of 2008, which govern storage and handling at refineries and depots.
Manali Petrochemicals, founded in 1986, is described as the only integrated polyol manufacturer in India and also makes propylene glycol and polyurethane systems.
Chennai sits on the flat Eastern Coastal Plains on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, and its location on the thermal equator means little seasonal temperature variation.
Chennai Petroleum acts as a mother industry for Manali, supplying feedstocks to neighbouring plants, and its products are marketed through Indian Oil, which is now its majority shareholder.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area). A marking check around Manali would read the gas group and temperature class against the unit being visited. Hydrocracker areas can involve hydrogen, which points towards the most demanding gas group, while fuel storage often sits in lower groups. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, subject to certification.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area). Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lube base stock and wax plants, crude and product storage, marine liquid terminal. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area).
The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation administers the Petroleum Rules, 2002 and the Explosives Rules, 2008. Operators use licensed storage and their own safety teams, so ask for site-specific equipment requirements.
April to June is the hottest period at 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, with high humidity all year. Check the device's operating temperature and humidity ratings and its battery behaviour in heat on the datasheet.
Possibly, but only where its marking suits the classification of that specific area. Marine terminals and refinery units can differ in gas group and temperature class, and port authorities add their own permits. Confirm the area classification and permit rules with the terminal operator before any approval.
