Environment
The setting is remote, with cold winters. Low-temperature performance and battery life are practical concerns for portable equipment.
The city sits at the crossroads of US Highways 2 and 85, near the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, about 18 miles from Montana and 60 miles from the Canadian border. Zone 1 work arises at drilling rigs, wellsites, tank batteries and gas gathering facilities. If you are specifying an Ex-proof mobile phone for Bakken, North Dakota (Williston Basin), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Bakken, North Dakota (Williston Basin): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Oil was discovered in the Williston Basin in 1951. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing lifted output, and North Dakota and Montana together passed 1 million barrels a day in April 2014.
The Bakken is relatively thin, no more than 250 feet, with low permeability, so better knowledge of where the resource lies has translated directly into higher output.
Williston, founded in 1887, had 29,160 residents in 2020, its population nearly doubling between 2010 and 2020 because of the oil boom.
Williston has a cold semi-arid climate with a January mean near 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit, about 39 days a year with lows of zero or below, and extremes from minus 50 to 110 degrees.
North Dakota crude oil production passed 1.0 million barrels a day, driven by the Bakken and Three Forks formations of the Williston Basin in North Dakota and eastern Montana.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Bakken, North Dakota (Williston Basin). A marking check at a drilling rig, tank battery or gas gathering site would match zone, gas group and temperature class with the operator's classification. The IS-04Z1 target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, intended for Zone 1 gas. The operator determines what group and class actually apply at each location.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are drilling rigs, wellsites and tank batteries, gas gathering and processing, crude loading facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Wellpads and associated tank and compressor areas can contain flammable gas and vapour, and the operator defines classified areas and approvals. Always ask for the site's area classification and equipment policy before entering.
Williston records a January mean around 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit and several days a year at minus 20 or lower. Check a handset's low-temperature operating range and battery performance in the cold, and keep spare batteries warm inside clothing.
The Bakken is remote with cold winters, so low-temperature performance and battery life are practical concerns for portable equipment. Check the datasheet's operating range once published, keep spare charged devices in a safe, warm area, and trial the phone in your own conditions. Confirm limits with the site operator.
