Italy: industry on the ground
The Sarroch refinery in Sardinia, run by Saras since it began operating in 1965, has a refining capacity of about 15 million tonnes a year, equal to roughly 15% of total Italian refining capacity.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refineries, petrochemical poles and gas terminals from Porto Marghera to Priolo and Sarroch. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Italy, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Italy: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Italy. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Italy market guide.
The Sarroch refinery in Sardinia, run by Saras since it began operating in 1965, has a refining capacity of about 15 million tonnes a year, equal to roughly 15% of total Italian refining capacity.
Directive 2014/34/EU became mandatory for manufacturers on 20 April 2016, replacing Directive 94/9/EC, and equipment groups divide into Group I for mining and Group II for surface industries.
Natural gas supplies more than half of Italian electricity, and an important share of electricity is imported, mainly from Switzerland and France, so gas-fired power stations are a large source of classified areas.
Petroleum is mostly used for transport and natural gas for electricity and heating, so fuel terminals, depots and gas distribution networks are found across the whole country.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Italy. An Italian reviewer at a polo petrolchimico or terminal would expect ATEX evidence under the EU directive and national decree, tied to the plant's zone documents. IECEx papers help international EPCs and contractors working along the coast. A dual route lets one pack serve both. Certification is in progress; no certificate has been issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
The market guide for Italy covers Priolo, Melilli and Augusta, Gela, Milazzo, Sarroch, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Southern Italian summers can be very hot, and direct sun can push surface and battery temperatures up. Check the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate and avoid leaving devices on hot equipment. Coastal and offshore sites add salt air, which affects ports and contacts.
Prepare the EU declaration of conformity, the ATEX or IECEx certificate, Ex marking details and instructions in Italian where required. Italian sites often ask for a safety data pack for contractor equipment, so ask the site safety office for its template before sending devices.
ATEX is the reference in the EU, applied in Italy through national legislation. Some operators and contractors may also ask for IECEx. Ask the operator which evidence it accepts, and note that the IS-04Z1 programme is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
