Complex refinery
CPCL's Manali refinery is rated at 10.5 million tonnes a year and includes crude distillation, hydrocracker, FCC, delayed coker and reforming units, plus lube and wax production.
Chennai's hazardous-area work centres on North Chennai, where Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) runs the Manali refinery and Kamarajar Port (Ennore) handles liquid and gas cargoes. Refining, lube and wax production and LNG handling create Zone 1 areas. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Chennai India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

CPCL's Manali refinery is rated at 10.5 million tonnes a year and includes crude distillation, hydrocracker, FCC, delayed coker and reforming units, plus lube and wax production.
Kamarajar Port, about 18 km north of Chennai Port, has a marine liquid terminal for petroleum, oils and chemicals and an Indian Oil LNG import terminal of 5 million tonnes a year.
Most rain comes from the northeast monsoon between October and December, when cyclones are common and flooding of low-lying areas can occur, with about 120 centimetres a year.
A propylene plant of 17,000 tonnes a year, commissioned in 1988, and a 30,000 tonne a year paraffin wax plant add petrochemical and wax operations to the fuel refinery.
The Manali refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation has a capacity of 10.5 million tonnes a year and is one of India's most complex refineries, with fuel, lube, wax and petrochemical feedstock units.
The refinery began as a 1965 joint venture and was built from the ground up in a record 27 months at 2.5 million tonnes a year, so many units are decades old.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Chennai (Manali and Ennore industrial area). North Chennai reviewers at a refinery such as Manali or at the Ennore port terminals would look for certificate evidence tied to the specific Zone 1 areas of use. Showing both ATEX and IECEx routes helps international contractors who move between refinery shutdown work and LNG handling. The IS-04Z1 certificates are still in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lube base stock and wax plants, crude and product storage, marine liquid terminal. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
A refinery and petrochemical complex has process units, tank farms, loading gantries and feedstock lines, all with classified areas set by the operators. Confirm each operator's area classification and accepted equipment approvals before a visit.
Most rain and cyclones arrive between October and December, and low-lying areas can flood. Plan equipment deliveries and shutdown work outside that window where possible, and keep devices in sealed cases during transport.
Salt-laden humid air accelerates corrosion on ports, seals and contacts. An IP68 sealed design helps, and rinsing and routine inspection of seals remain good practice. Battery life also depends on heat. Ask the site's inspection team what cleaning and storage routines they expect for portable equipment.
