Basra Oil Company: who works there
Under a 2009 technical services contract with the then South Oil Company, later renamed Basra Oil Company, the Rumaila Operating Organisation runs the field alongside the state company.
Basra Oil Company is a state-owned Iraqi company under the Ministry of Oil, headquartered in Basra and renamed from Iraqi South Oil Company in 2017. It manages southern oil fields; PetroChina became West Qurna 1 operator in January 2024, and BOC was approved in January 2026 to manage West Qurna 2. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Basra Oil Company, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Basra Oil Company: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Iraq. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main sites and the hazardous-area types a portable device is likely to meet at this organisation.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Under a 2009 technical services contract with the then South Oil Company, later renamed Basra Oil Company, the Rumaila Operating Organisation runs the field alongside the state company.
The Rumaila workforce is about 8,200 people, 93 per cent of them Iraqi, with training academies on site, so local crews and contractors carry most field work.
The Rumaila field, split into North and South, lies around 30 km north of the Kuwait border, with proven reserves put at about 17 billion barrels, so it is one of the largest fields to plan for.
Zubair was discovered in 1948 and Rumaila in 1953, so surface facilities range from decades-old plant to recently modernised units.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Basra Oil Company. A reviewer at Basra Oil Company would expect certificate evidence before any handheld enters oilfield facilities at Rumaila or Majnoon. Many field projects involve international contractors and EPCs, so a dual ATEX and IECEx route lets one product answer both families of paperwork. The IS-04Z1 is in certification and no certificate has been issued yet.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
At Rumaila about 93 per cent of roughly 8,200 workers are Iraqi, and training academies operate on site. Arabic-language instructions and menus are therefore useful, alongside English for international contractors; check which language the operator requires for permits and gas alarms.
About 1,600 square km, roughly 50 km west of Basra. Facilities are spread across desert, so plan for long travel distances, spare batteries and offline procedures. Mobile coverage inside process areas may vary, so confirm communications arrangements with the operator.
The organisation runs its own supplier registration and equipment approval, so the decision sits with its procurement and HSE teams. Ask them what evidence they require. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet, so share only the datasheet and target marking, and make no claim of approval.
