ATEX and IECEx Smartphone Distributor in Romania

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for Romanian refineries, well sites, gas plants and port terminals rather than for an office. The national gas transmission system is owned by the state company Transgaz and interconnector pipelines link Romania with Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine, so border compressor and metering stations are part of the network. Distribution partners for Romania are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

More about Romania that matters for portable equipment

Romania: industry on the ground

Romania had five refineries left by 2018 with about 13.7 million tonnes a year of capacity, far above domestic demand, and exports lubricants, bitumen, fertilisers and petrochemicals across the region.

Romania: projects and investment

Neptun Deep, about 160 km off the Romanian coast in 100 to 1,000 m of water, is owned 50/50 by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is budgeted at about 4 billion euros and targets 8 billion cubic metres of gas a year.

Romania: industry on the ground

Petrobrazi near Ploiești, founded in 1934, runs one module with a capacity of 4.5 million tonnes a year and has a pipeline link to the Port of Constanța rated at 10,000 tonnes a day.

Romania: projects and investment

OMV Petrom completed an offshore campaign in the Lebăda Est and Lebăda Vest fields on the Histria block in the Black Sea in 2010, showing that offshore work is an established part of Romanian upstream activity.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Romania. A Romanian procurement or HSE reviewer, particularly at the refineries around Ploiești and Brazi, would expect ATEX evidence tied to the EU framework, with the national transposition in view. The IS-04Z1 certification programme is in progress, so no certificate exists yet. Running IECEx alongside ATEX would also help international contractors and EPCs who arrive for a shutdown with their own approval paperwork.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Romania

Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Romania. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Romania.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Romania

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Romania today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Romania cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which sites in Romania does this cover?

The market guide for Romania covers Ploiești and Brazi, Năvodari, Constanța, Vadu and Corbu, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Romania?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Romania.

Does Romania require ATEX certified phones for hazardous areas?

Romania is an EU member, so ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies to equipment and Directive 1999/92/EC to workplace zoning. Zone 1 and Zone 2 devices should carry CE and Ex markings with instructions in Romanian where required. Operators usually add their own approval and permit procedures.

Who runs the main oil and gas sites in Romania?

OMV Petrom, owned by OMV since 2004, is the best-known upstream and downstream operator, and Transgaz owns the gas transmission system. Each company runs its own supplier registration and contractor induction, so contact their procurement and HSE teams for current requirements.

Does one handset cover both gas and dust at a Romanian fertiliser or chemical plant?

The target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 for gas, with Zone 21 dust protection in the same programme. Certification is still in progress, so no certificate exists. Check the final certificate and schedule of conditions against the operator's zone drawings before any use.
