Japan: infrastructure
Small rivers, including the Edo River, supply water to the Keiyo industrial region, and the Port of Chiba serves the zone.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Japan every shift: refinery and petrochemical-complex operators, LNG terminal crews, inspection engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. Since a January 2017 notice an IECEx test report can be submitted as the applicant's prior test results, and a certificate is valid for three years. An ATEX and IECEx smartphone distributor in Japan would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Japan has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Japan. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Small rivers, including the Edo River, supply water to the Keiyo industrial region, and the Port of Chiba serves the zone.
Explosion-protected electrical equipment must pass type examination, called kentei, under Article 44-2 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, and equipment without the pass mark may not be used.
The type examination involves a sample for structural inspection, with no factory audit in law, and the applicant can be a Japanese or foreign manufacturer or an importer.
The Keiyo Industrial Zone runs along the north-eastern coast of Tokyo Bay through eight cities in Chiba Prefecture, from Urayasu to Futtsu, including Chiba, Kisarazu and Ichihara.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Japan. A Japanese reviewer at a coastal petrochemical complex would expect TIIS evidence, which the sheet lists as in progress, and IECEx. ATEX evidence also helps international contractors and global groups. A dual route lets one pack serve the complex's own review and visitors. No certificate has been issued.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Japan. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Explosion-protected electrical equipment must pass type examination under Article 44-2 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, and equipment without the pass mark may not be used. Registered examination bodies, including some outside Japan, carry it out. Check the current process with one of them.
Typically in coastal industrial zones such as the Keiyo zone along Tokyo Bay, which has refineries and chemical plants, and similar bayside complexes elsewhere. The operator issues the area classification, so request the zone drawing, gas group and temperature class before selecting equipment.
The market guide lists TIIS and IECEx as in progress and neither has been granted. Whether a given site needs TIIS depends on the operator and the regulations it follows. Ask the site operator and check the current certification status before ordering.
