Mesaieed was established in 1949 as a tanker terminal and was Qatar's only deepwater port for more than 20 years; it is 36 km south of Doha.

Ras Laffan Industrial City, 80 km north of Doha, is Qatar's main site for liquefied natural gas and gas-to-liquids, hosting Pearl GTL, ORYX GTL, QatarEnergy LNG plants and the Laffan Refinery.

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Qatar. A Qatari technical reviewer at QatarEnergy or its Ras Laffan and Mesaieed operators would expect an IECEx Certificate of Conformity first, with ATEX 2014/34/EU evidence beside it. A dual route helps the international EPCs and contractors working inside the industrial cities. Both are in progress, MOCI conformity and CRA radio approval are separate, and none is granted.

What does an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone in Qatar cost?
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Is access to Ras Laffan restricted?
Industrial cities typically have gate and permit systems run by their administration and plant operators. Contractors normally need sponsorship and induction, so ask your host.
Where are Qatar's main hazardous-area sites?
Ras Laffan Industrial City in the north for LNG, gas-to-liquids and refining, and Mesaieed Industrial City in the south, a prime industrial zone and tanking centre. Both are administered by QatarEnergy subsidiaries.
Does the radio need separate approval in Qatar?
The radio inside the handset needs separate CRA type approval, and conformity for the imported product is administered by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Both sit inside the launch programme and neither has been granted. Confirm with the site operator which evidence is needed before bringing a device in.
