Petronas: geography and layout
The headquarters is in Tower 1 of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, while operating assets are offshore and in Sarawak, Sabah and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
PETRONAS is Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, integrated across exploration, production, refining, gas, LNG and petrochemicals. Petronas was established and incorporated on 17 August 1974 under the Petroleum Development Act, and is vested with all oil and gas resources in Malaysia, so it is the licensor as well as an operator. This page sets out how an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone supply route to Petronas will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Petronas cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Malaysia. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Suppliers apply for a PETRONAS licence or registration through the PETRONAS Licensing Management System (PLMS), then trade through its procurement platforms such as the Unified Procurement Platform and B2B Marketplace. A licence covers upstream and downstream supply; a registration covers downstream subsidiaries only. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
The headquarters is in Tower 1 of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, while operating assets are offshore and in Sarawak, Sabah and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The company is vertically integrated, active in exploration, extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation and trading, so hazardous areas span offshore platforms, plants and fuel retail.
The ASEAN Fertilizer plant at Bintulu in Sarawak was set up in 1980, adding ammonia and urea processing to the Bintulu industrial cluster.
The first oil well in Malaysia was drilled at Miri in Sarawak in 1910, known as the Grand Old Lady, which shows a long industrial history in north Borneo and ageing facilities in places.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Petronas. A PETRONAS reviewer would expect certificate evidence before a handheld enters an offshore platform, LNG plant or refinery unit. Its sites involve international contractors, EPCs and licensors, so a dual ATEX and IECEx route lets one product answer both families of paperwork. The IS-04Z1 is in certification and no certificate has been issued.
There is no stock to order for Petronas yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Sites are hot and humid year-round with heavy rain, often with salt air near the coast, which stresses seals, connectors and batteries. For handheld devices check ingress protection, corrosion resistance and thermal limits, and confirm each site's own environmental requirements.
Malaysian oil and gas operators commonly accept recognised international schemes such as IECEx and ATEX, in addition to local regulatory requirements, and Petronas applies its own technical specifications. Confirm with the operating unit which certificates and local approvals are required.
Heat, humidity and rain are constant, and offshore adds salt spray. IP68 sealing helps the housing cope but is not explosion protection. Check the datasheet temperature range, test battery behaviour under local heat, and ask each site's HSE team how portable devices are stored and charged.
