Cold winters
Winter months average around minus 2 C, and three out of four January days are below freezing, so outdoor equipment should tolerate low temperatures.
Oslo is Norway's capital and a major maritime and energy-company centre. Sjursoya, a peninsula used entirely by the Port of Oslo, is the main oil port for Eastern Norway and handles petroleum products and methanol, which gives Oslo its main classified areas. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Oslo, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Oslo: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Oslo. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Winter months average around minus 2 C, and three out of four January days are below freezing, so outdoor equipment should tolerate low temperatures.
Equinor's Oslo office and Aker Solutions are at Fornebu, which lies in Baerum municipality rather than Oslo itself.
Because shipping and maritime insurance headquarters are concentrated in Oslo, buyers of marine equipment often meet and approve suppliers there even when the vessels or yards are elsewhere in Norway.
The Port of Oslo is run by Oslo Havn KF, a municipal enterprise accountable to the city that was first established by royal charter in 1735 and had around 100 employees in 2021.
Oslo sits at the northern end of the Oslofjord, with a municipal population of 724,290 in 2025, a greater urban area of about 1.1 million, and a metropolitan area of roughly 1.5 million.
Oslo has a humid continental climate with fairly cold winters and some of the warmest summers in Norway, and the driest seasons are winter and spring while summer and autumn are wettest.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Oslo. Norway applies ATEX-based rules to equipment in explosive atmospheres, so a reviewer at Sjursoya terminals or a maritime operator would expect ATEX evidence first. IECEx still helps international suppliers and contractors who work across borders and supply chains. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet, as certification is in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are petroleum product storage and loading, methanol and bulk cargo handling, fuel depots. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Largely, yes. The city is a hub of shipping, banking and trade, with many maritime company headquarters, while major process plants and offshore bases lie elsewhere in Norway. Many suppliers meet buyers in Oslo, then arrange site visits and deliveries separately.
Gardermoen airport is 35 km north-east of the city, and sea freight arrives through Oslo's port. Norway is outside the EU customs union, so allow time for customs declarations and confirm any approval requirements for electrical and radio equipment with your forwarder.
Winter months average around minus 2 C and most January days are below freezing, so battery performance and operating range matter. Check the certified ambient temperature range, keep the phone warm between tasks and charge in a safe area. Ask the operator about cold-weather practice.
