Offshore support base
The Sonda de Campeche, with the Cantarell field, lies roughly 85 km offshore, so many staff here work rotations on platforms and vessels.
Ciudad del Carmen is a port city on Isla del Carmen in Campeche, and the main shore base for offshore oil activity in the Sonda de Campeche. Pemex operates a maritime terminal here, so classified-area work is at port facilities and offshore platforms supplied from the island. This page explains what to look for in an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Ciudad del Carmen, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Ciudad del Carmen: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Ciudad del Carmen. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The Sonda de Campeche, with the Cantarell field, lies roughly 85 km offshore, so many staff here work rotations on platforms and vessels.
The city sits on an island in the Laguna de Terminos, linked to the mainland by the 3.9 km Zacatal Bridge.
The city lies on Isla del Carmen at the western edge of the Yucatan Peninsula and has been part of the state of Campeche since 1863.
Pemex's exploration of the Campeche Basin in the early 1970s led to the Cantarell field, about 70 km from Ciudad del Carmen, which supplied 63.2 per cent of Mexico's crude at its 2004 peak before declining.
Carmen was granted port status in 1841 because of its maritime trade and was made a city in 1856; earlier centuries saw it used as a port for repairing ships.
The Ku-Maloob-Zaap area lies about 107 km north-east of Ciudad del Carmen and was described as Mexico's largest oil producer, so offshore activity is centred north-east of the city.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Ciudad del Carmen. Offshore support work out of Ciudad del Carmen involves Pemex and many service contractors, some of them international. Reviewers for platforms and the maritime terminal commonly see both ATEX and IECEx files in contractor packs, and a dual route lets one device file serve different offshore clients. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet; certification is in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are marine terminal and storage, offshore production platforms, supply-vessel and crew-change bases. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typically by helicopter or supply vessel, depending on the operator. Transfers are weather dependent, and carry-on rules for powered devices vary by operator and aircraft. Confirm requirements with the operator's logistics team.
It is commonly used as a shore base for operations in the southern Gulf of Mexico, and Cantarell-area offshore assets are described as lying tens of nautical miles offshore. Confirm which base, operator and transport your project uses.
Gulf hurricane season can disrupt crew changes and sea transport, and the city sits on an island linked to the mainland by the Zacatal Bridge. Allow extra lead time and agree shipping routes with your contractor or Pemex. Confirm any restrictions with the site operator.
