Bahrain: background
Bapco was founded in 1929, found the first oil field in the Gulf outside Iran in 1932 and built the first Gulf refinery outside Iran in 1936, so some plant is very old.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in Bahrain every shift: refinery and gas-plant operators, smelter potroom crews, inspection engineers and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. Bahrain covers about 694 square kilometres, with Bahrain Island making up roughly 78 percent. It lies about 24 km off the Saudi coast and 28 km from Qatar. An ATEX and IECEx cell phone distributor in Bahrain would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Bahrain has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Bahrain. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Bahrain market guide.
Bapco was founded in 1929, found the first oil field in the Gulf outside Iran in 1932 and built the first Gulf refinery outside Iran in 1936, so some plant is very old.
Industry accounted for about 43 percent of Bahrain's GDP in 2023 estimates.
Most of Bahrain is low-lying barren desert surrounded by a shallow Gulf, so equipment faces salt air, sand and strong summer heat across the whole country.
Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority issues type approval certificates valid for three years, with test reports based on the EU Radio Equipment Directive, and a Bahraini supplier submits the application.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Bahrain. Bahrain conformity follows GCC-wide GSO regulations, and the technical evidence behind it for hazardous-area equipment is an IECEx Certificate of Conformity, so a Bapco or Alba reviewer would expect that first. An ATEX certificate beside it helps international contractors working at Sitra and Askar. Certification is in progress, and BSMD marking is being pursued.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Bahrain. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Yes. Bahrain is low-lying desert with very hot summers and coastal salt exposure, which stress batteries, seals and screens. Choose devices rated for high ambient temperature and store spare batteries in cool, safe areas.
The Bapco Energies group is the main operator, covering the Sitra refinery, gas processing and field operations, with Alba as the large metals user. Contractors usually register with each company's procurement and HSE teams; ask for the current process.
No: Bapco and Alba each run their own approved-vendor and engineering-evaluation process, so national conformity does not guarantee listing. BSMD marking and TRA approval are being pursued and are not finished. Confirm the vendor registration steps with the operator's procurement team, and plan for both timelines.
