Zone 1 gas across refining and upstream gas alike
Concón and Biobío refinery process units and Magallanes wellhead and gathering facilities are all classified Zone 1 gas atmospheres, and Ex ib IIC T4 covers the hydrocarbon gas groups common to both.
An explosion proof mobile phone for ENAP has to work at both ends of Chile. The state hydrocarbons company runs temperate refineries at Concón and Biobío and produces gas in Magallanes, near the sub-Antarctic tip of South America, so one company-wide device standard has to cope with a very wide range of weather, logistics and classified-area types. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and cold-climate testing in progress
Few national oil companies run operations spanning as wide a climate range as ENAP does between its central refineries and its far-southern gas fields.
Concón and Biobío refinery process units and Magallanes wellhead and gathering facilities are all classified Zone 1 gas atmospheres, and Ex ib IIC T4 covers the hydrocarbon gas groups common to both.
Gas production near the tip of South America operates in sustained cold and severe wind chill, conditions that test battery performance and material flexibility beyond what the temperate-zone refineries experience.
ENAP's own engineering function sets standards intended to apply across its full asset base, meaning a device accepted for refinery use is likely to be evaluated for Magallanes gas-field use under the same broad review rather than a wholly separate process.
Magallanes is geographically isolated from ENAP's central refining operations and from most of Chile's population and logistics network, raising the value of a rugged, self-sufficient device for field crews there.
EMM and MDM enrolment supports ENAP managing devices consistently across refining sites in central Chile and gas operations in the far south.
Chile's state hydrocarbons company, operating refineries in central Chile and gas production in the far-southern Magallanes region.
ENAP's refining side is the Aconcagua refinery at Concón in the Valparaíso Region and the Bío Bío refinery at Hualpén, near Concepción, with a smaller Gregorio refinery in Magallanes. Marine and storage terminals at Quintero, San Vicente and Cabo Negro connect them to shipping. Upstream, the Magallanes basin is the gas end of the business.
A refinery and a gas field run on different rhythms. The first lives on planned shutdowns and tight permit control; the second on long drives, short daylight and weather windows. Neither tolerates a handset that has to be left in a vehicle.
During a planned unit shutdown a refinery fills with contractor crews working under daily hot-work and entry permits. A handset that carries the permit, the site directory and a photograph of a finding saves the walk back to a safe-area office, and can be limited by the operator to the applications it has approved.
Receipt and dispatch at a terminal involves loading arms, hoses and tank gauging in wind and spray. IP68 sealing is designed to cope with wet hands and spray, and a camera with a legible photograph supports the handover between shifts.
Gas facilities in Magallanes sit far from Chile's main centres, and a call-out can mean a long drive in cold and wind. Battery behaviour in sustained cold is the question an evaluator should press, and the exact test conditions will appear on the certificate once issued.
No. The device is pre-launch, and IECEx certification is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Environmental durability testing is specified with sustained cold and wind-chill exposure in mind, and the certificate will state its exact test conditions once issued.
ENAP's engineering review is intended to apply company-wide, but each asset's specific classified-area documentation should still be confirmed locally.
ENAP is the dominant operator of gas production in the Magallanes region as part of Chile's state hydrocarbons operations.
We cannot describe an ENAP-specific programme, so ask ENAP directly. Operators of this kind generally want the certificate and its schedule of limits, the manufacturer's quality documentation, instructions for use in the language of the workforce, a service route, and evidence the device can be managed from an existing console.
Not in a way that changes the marking target. Methane at a wellhead is group IIA and hydrogen-rich refinery units are group IIC, and the IS-04Z1 target of Ex ib IIC T4 is intended to cover both. The area classification drawing for each unit remains the authority.
Only if the operator's rules allow it. Most operators require any electronic equipment in a classified area to be certified for it, so a contractor's ordinary phone stays outside the fence. Ask the permit issuer how handsets are controlled on that site.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Chile. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
