South Korea: logistics and access
South Korea imports nearly all its oil and was the world's third-largest importer of liquefied natural gas in 2024, so LNG terminals and fuel storage are major classified-area sites.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in South Korea every shift: refinery and petrochemical-complex operators at Ulsan and Yeosu, shipyard tank engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. This page explains what to look for in a rugged cell phone for South Korea, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for South Korea: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

South Korea imports nearly all its oil and was the world's third-largest importer of liquefied natural gas in 2024, so LNG terminals and fuel storage are major classified-area sites.
Most rainfall is concentrated in the summer months, which matters for outdoor equipment: ingress protection and condensation resistance are worth checking for devices used across the monsoon season.
Ulsan opened the country's first hydrogen car charging station in 2009 and the first hydrogen ship charging station at Jangsaengpo Port in 2021, and a Green Hydrogen Town project is in progress, adding hydrogen-classified areas.
Ulsan was chosen as a Special Industrial Zone in 1962 and became a city in 1963, which is why large refining, petrochemical and shipbuilding sites sit close together on its coast.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In South Korea. Korea swings from hot, humid summers to cold, dry winters, and the yards add marine exposure. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified across the full range rather than one season. IP68 is ingress protection only, and gives no explosion protection by itself.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Ulsan has opened hydrogen charging stations and is developing a Green Hydrogen Town, so hydrogen gas groups may appear in new classified areas. Always check a device's gas group marking against the area classification drawing rather than assuming a general Zone 1 rating is enough.
Summers bring concentrated heavy rainfall and humidity, and winters can be cold, so look at the operating temperature range, water ingress rating and glove-friendly touch operation. Coastal sites at Ulsan also bring salt air, which can affect ports and contacts.
Android 16 carries both on one build, and operations at Korean sites run predominantly in Korean with English for international contractors and documentation. Check the language pack and the keyboard layout you require during an evaluation unit trial.
