Scale
The channel is roughly 50 miles long and is described as the second-largest petrochemical complex in the world. Port Houston operates eight public facilities along it.
The Houston Ship Channel links the Port of Houston to the Gulf of Mexico and is lined with refineries, chemical plants and terminals, forming one of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world. Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas arise at process units, tank farms and loading docks along the channel. If you are specifying an intrinsically safe smartphone for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Houston. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The channel is roughly 50 miles long and is described as the second-largest petrochemical complex in the world. Port Houston operates eight public facilities along it.
ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery (588,000 barrels a day, about 3,400 acres) sits beside the channel. The Deer Park refinery (about 275,000 barrels a day crude capacity) has been wholly owned by Pemex since Shell completed its exit in January 2022.
The Port of Houston is the busiest US port by overall tonnage and by foreign tonnage, and is run as a cooperative of the port authority and more than 150 private companies.
Houston sits on flat Gulf coastal plain, and the flat terrain together with extensive development has worsened flooding, which can affect low-lying sites and access roads in heavy rain.
The channel runs from the Turning Basin about four miles east of downtown Houston to a Gulf gateway between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
The modern port was approved by Harris County voters in 1909 and opened in November 1914, partly because an inland port was seen as safer after the 1900 Galveston hurricane.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Houston and the Houston Ship Channel. Operators along the channel run inspection rounds across process units, tank farms and dock areas, where a handheld is carried into classified space many times a shift. An intrinsically safe handset is designed for that carrying pattern. Photographs and notes from a 50 MP camera could support turnaround records, once certification is complete and the operator approves use.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms, dock and terminal loading areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Flat terrain and heavy rain can cause local flooding on roads and low-lying areas. Operators usually have severe-weather plans, so allow extra travel time, keep equipment in waterproof cases when transporting, and ask the site about access arrangements.
Houston has many engineering and procurement firms and a major port and airports, so shipping is straightforward. Agree lead times and local support with the supplier, and confirm which area classification and approval marks your client's plant requires.
Houston has long hot summers, humidity, and exposure to hurricanes and flooding, which shapes outdoor work and turnaround planning. IP68 protects against dust and water ingress, but a battery in heat still needs sensible handling, and charging belongs in safe areas. Ask the operator about local rules on storm preparation and equipment storage.
