Intrinsically Safe Cell Phone Distributor in Italy

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refineries, petrochemical poles and gas terminals from Porto Marghera to Priolo and Sarroch. Eni, which operates in 79 countries, is counted among the world's seven oil and gas supermajors, so Italian refineries and gas sites often follow large-operator procedures for contractors and equipment. An intrinsically safe cell phone distributor in Italy would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

More about Italy that matters for portable equipment

Italy: geography and layout

Moderate natural gas reserves have been found mainly in the Po Valley and offshore in the Adriatic Sea, which concentrates gas production and processing in the north and east.

Italy: background

Hydropower was practically the only source of electricity until 1960, and all of Italy's active geothermal plants are in Tuscany, so dam and geothermal sites sit alongside oil and gas facilities.

Italy: industry on the ground

The Sarroch refinery in Sardinia, run by Saras since it began operating in 1965, has a refining capacity of about 15 million tonnes a year, equal to roughly 15% of total Italian refining capacity.

Italy: rules and approvals

Directive 2014/34/EU became mandatory for manufacturers on 20 April 2016, replacing Directive 94/9/EC, and equipment groups divide into Group I for mining and Group II for surface industries.

The term · intrinsically safe

What “intrinsically safe” means for a smartphone

Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.

The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.

In Italy. A fermata at an Italian refinery or petrochemical pole brings large contractor crews through many zones in a short window. An intrinsically safe handheld lets inspectors record and report at the point of work. That is the design intent, and the device remains subject to certification and site approval.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Italy

Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Italy. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Italy.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Italy

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an intrinsically safe cell phone in Italy today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does an intrinsically safe cell phone in Italy cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

What does ‘intrinsically safe’ mean for the IS-04Z1?

The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.

Which sites in Italy does this cover?

The market guide for Italy covers Priolo, Melilli and Augusta, Gela, Milazzo, Sarroch, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Italy?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Italy.

Does Italian summer heat matter for Ex handheld devices?

Southern Italian summers can be very hot, and direct sun can push surface and battery temperatures up. Check the maximum ambient temperature on the certificate and avoid leaving devices on hot equipment. Coastal and offshore sites add salt air, which affects ports and contacts.

How should I prepare documents for Italian industrial sites?

Prepare the EU declaration of conformity, the ATEX or IECEx certificate, Ex marking details and instructions in Italian where required. Italian sites often ask for a safety data pack for contractor equipment, so ask the site safety office for its template before sending devices.

Does Italy require ATEX evidence specifically?

ATEX is the reference in the EU, applied in Italy through national legislation. Some operators and contractors may also ask for IECEx. Ask the operator which evidence it accepts, and note that the IS-04Z1 programme is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
