Climate
The Gulf Coast location is hot and humid with hurricane exposure, which shapes turnaround scheduling.
Motiva also runs the largest base oil plant in the Western Hemisphere, with a base oil capacity of 40,000 barrels a day supplied to customers in more than 15 countries. Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas arise at refinery process units, petrochemical plants and marine terminals. Motiva's Port Arthur refinery reached 600,000 barrels a day in 2012, and the company describes its refinery as North America's largest. Motiva has been wholly owned by Saudi Aramco since 2017.
The TotalEnergies refinery completed the largest turnaround in its history in 2023, which shows how large the periodic shutdown work is on these complexes.
Other investments in the city include Valero's 775 million dollar petrochemical plant expansion and a 1.75 billion dollar gasification and cogeneration unit at the BASF and Fina site.
TotalEnergies' Port Arthur platform has a crude processing capacity of 238,000 barrels a day and dates from 1936, with a coker added in 2011 to handle heavy crude.
An ethane cracker with a capacity of 1 million tonnes of ethylene a year, built by the Baystar joint venture for about 2 billion US dollars, was inaugurated at Port Arthur in 2022.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Port Arthur, Texas. Motiva, owned wholly by Saudi Aramco since 2017, and other operators around the Sabine-Neches waterway work with international contractors. IECEx gives those teams a certificate of conformity and a schedule of conditions to compare. For the IS-04Z1 it is a target only; nothing has been issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms, marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The city is about 90 miles east of Houston, the usual gateway, and lies on the west side of Sabine Lake. Confirm customs and site delivery arrangements with your freight forwarder and the plant's receiving contact.
Process units, tank farms, loading jetties and crackers all have classified areas for flammable gas and vapour, and the operator defines their extent. Request the area classification drawings and the site's equipment rules before any visit.
Motiva's website refers to supplier resources and an SAP Ariba platform, so formal onboarding is likely at large operators. Equipment approval is a separate matter. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Confirm requirements with the site operator before approaching procurement.
