Hazardous Area Smartphone in US Shale Oil Operations

US shale oil comes mainly from the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico and the Bakken in North Dakota. Tight reservoirs typically need roughly 15 to 20 percent natural gas in the pore space to drive the oil, so oil wells commonly come with associated gas to handle. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for US shale oil operations, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

More about US shale oil operations that matters for portable equipment

US shale oil operations: geography and layout

The Permian Basin alone is about 250 miles wide and 300 miles long, which shows how widely shale activity is spread.

US shale oil operations: industry on the ground

The Permian Basin supplied about 46 percent of US domestic oil in 2023, while other tight oil plays accounted for a further 22 percent, based on figures from the US Energy Information Administration and Enverus.

US shale oil operations: people and language

About two thirds of the world's active drilling rigs are in the United States and Canada, and many independent operators and contractors have shale expertise, so crews and service firms are plentiful.

Tight oil formations in the United States include the Bakken, Niobrara, Barnett and Eagle Ford shales, spread across several states and climates.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In US shale oil operations. Zone 1 areas arise at drilling rigs, wellsites, tank batteries, compressor stations and gas gathering and processing. Operators classify their own sites, while the Railroad Commission of Texas and the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources oversee oil and gas in their states. SAMS does not classify areas.

Questions · US Shale Oil Operations

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in US Shale Oil Operations today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in US Shale Oil Operations cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at US shale oil operations would use it?

Likely candidates are drilling rigs, wellsites and tank batteries, compressor stations, gas gathering and processing. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Which shale basins matter most for handset demand?

The Permian dominates, followed by the Eagle Ford and Bakken, which together made up about 93 percent of US tight oil in 2023. Each has a different climate, from hot and dusty West Texas to very cold North Dakota.

Why does the shale industry change demand so quickly?

Activity follows oil prices and drilling schedules, with many independent operators adjusting programs quickly. Suppliers usually need flexible stock and fast service, and buyers should agree lead times in advance.

Do Permian and Bakken operators apply the same equipment rules?

Not necessarily. Producers and field service contractors generally set their own equipment requirements, and the states have separate regulators for oil and gas. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Confirm requirements with the site operator in each basin.
