Hazardous Area Smartphone in Houston

The Houston Ship Channel links the Port of Houston to the Gulf of Mexico and is lined with refineries, chemical plants and terminals, forming one of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world. Greater Houston had about 7.8 million residents at the 2020 census and is recognised worldwide for oil and gas, giving contractors and engineers a very deep local labour pool. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.

Named sites

ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery (588,000 barrels a day, about 3,400 acres) sits beside the channel. The Deer Park refinery (about 275,000 barrels a day crude capacity) has been wholly owned by Pemex since Shell completed its exit in January 2022.

Climate

Houston has a humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and exposure to Gulf hurricanes and flooding, which shapes outdoor work and turnaround planning.

More about Houston and the Houston Ship Channel that matters for portable equipment

Houston and the Houston Ship Channel: geography and layout

Houston sits on flat Gulf coastal plain, and the flat terrain together with extensive development has worsened flooding, which can affect low-lying sites and access roads in heavy rain.

Houston and the Houston Ship Channel: geography and layout

The channel runs from the Turning Basin about four miles east of downtown Houston to a Gulf gateway between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

Houston and the Houston Ship Channel: background

The modern port was approved by Harris County voters in 1909 and opened in November 1914, partly because an inland port was seen as safer after the 1900 Galveston hurricane.

Houston and the Houston Ship Channel: climate and equipment wear

Houston has a humid subtropical climate, with highs of at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit on an average of 106.5 days a year and winds from the south and southeast carrying Gulf moisture.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Houston and the Houston Ship Channel. Classified areas here include refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms and dock or terminal loading areas. The facility operator, not SAMS, carries out the area classification and decides which equipment may enter each zone. A supplier datasheet only helps the operator compare the marking with that classification; it does not classify anything.

Questions · Houston

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Houston today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Houston cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Houston and the Houston Ship Channel would use it?

Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms, dock and terminal loading areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

Why is flooding a planning point for Houston plant visits?

Flat terrain and heavy rain can cause local flooding on roads and low-lying areas. Operators usually have severe-weather plans, so allow extra travel time, keep equipment in waterproof cases when transporting, and ask the site about access arrangements.

What is the best way to source equipment for Houston-based teams?

Houston has many engineering and procurement firms and a major port and airports, so shipping is straightforward. Agree lead times and local support with the supplier, and confirm which area classification and approval marks your client's plant requires.

How does Gulf Coast weather affect handheld use here?

Houston has long hot summers, humidity, and exposure to hurricanes and flooding, which shapes outdoor work and turnaround planning. IP68 protects against dust and water ingress, but a battery in heat still needs sensible handling, and charging belongs in safe areas. Ask the operator about local rules on storm preparation and equipment storage.
