Facilities lie well offshore, Thunder Horse about 150 miles south-east of New Orleans, so access depends on helicopter and vessel schedules.
Operators must submit decommissioning plans before removing platforms and carry out post-decommissioning surveys, so offshore work continues after production ends. Hazardous-area work covers well bays, process decks and drill floors, regulated offshore by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. Distribution partners for US Gulf of Mexico offshore platforms and rigs are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. US Gulf of Mexico offshore platforms and rigs has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Gulf of Mexico Rigs. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Facilities lie well offshore, Thunder Horse about 150 miles south-east of New Orleans, so access depends on helicopter and vessel schedules.
BP operates Thunder Horse, a semi-submersible in about 1,840 m of water with first oil in 2008. Shell operates Perdido, a spar in about 2,450 m of water, with Chevron and BP as partners.
The Gulf basin covers about 620,000 square miles, and almost half of it consists of shallow continental shelf waters.
The Gulf has one of the highest concentrations of lightning storms of any ocean region, which is an important consideration for exposed offshore decks and for portable electronics.
Gulf sea-surface temperatures average about 28 degrees Celsius in summer and feed Atlantic hurricanes, so storm evacuation and shutdown planning is part of normal offshore operations.
Most offshore drilling in the Gulf takes place in the western part and in the Bay of Campeche, where the continental shelf is wide and shallow.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In US Gulf of Mexico offshore platforms and rigs. Offshore Gulf of Mexico areas include drill floors and well bays, production process decks, wellhead areas and utility and compression areas. The operator classifies them, and BSEE is the lead federal agency for safety and environmental oversight on the Outer Continental Shelf. US agencies now call the region the Gulf of America.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for US Gulf of Mexico offshore platforms and rigs yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are drill floors and well bays, production process decks, wellhead areas, utility and compression areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for US Gulf of Mexico offshore platforms and rigs.
The Gulf has frequent lightning and a hurricane season, and operators routinely shut in and evacuate platforms ahead of storms. Keep devices stowed and charged when weather is forecast, and follow the platform's procedures for electronics during storm warnings.
Federal offshore safety is overseen by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and each operator adds its own electrical and area-classification requirements. Before bringing any portable device offshore, confirm with the operator what approvals and markings they accept.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is the lead federal agency for safety and environmental oversight on the Outer Continental Shelf. Operators and rig contractors also approve equipment against their own safety case. Confirm requirements with the operator before sending any device offshore.
