South Korea: geography and layout
The country has no proven oil reserves; the Donghae-1 gas field produced between 2004 and 2021 and east-coast gas exploration started in 2024, so most hazardous-area work is downstream rather than upstream.
The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in South Korea every shift: refinery and petrochemical-complex operators at Ulsan and Yeosu, shipyard tank engineers, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. Most rainfall is concentrated in the summer months, which matters for outdoor equipment: ingress protection and condensation resistance are worth checking for devices used across the monsoon season. A hazardous area mobile phone distributor in South Korea would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. South Korea has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in South Korea. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS South Korea market guide.
The country has no proven oil reserves; the Donghae-1 gas field produced between 2004 and 2021 and east-coast gas exploration started in 2024, so most hazardous-area work is downstream rather than upstream.
Thermal generation provides more than two thirds of electricity and nuclear power most of the rest; the first plant, Kori near Busan, opened in 1977, so large plant outages involve many contractors.
GS Caltex concentrates its refining and petrochemical plants at the Yeosu Complex, covering about 6 million square metres, with 800,000 barrels per stream day of capacity and Korea's largest heavy oil upgrading unit at 275,000 barrels a day.
South Korea imports nearly all its oil and was the world's third-largest importer of liquefied natural gas in 2024, so LNG terminals and fuel storage are major classified-area sites.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In South Korea. Korean classified areas sit in three large coastal complexes at Ulsan, Yeosu and Daesan, with Onsan inside greater Ulsan, plus the shipbuilding yards at Geoje. The operator classifies each area. SAMS does not classify anywhere and designs the device only for a stated classification.
A distributor for South Korea would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for South Korea.
Ulsan is the best-known, with a very large refinery, petrochemical works and shipyard, and the country's LNG import terminals are another cluster. Because supply is almost entirely imported, fuel storage and terminal sites are central; confirm each site's classification with its operator.
Operators may ask for Korea's own national certification alongside, or instead of, international certificates such as IECEx or ATEX. Requirements differ by site and contractor, so ask the operator's safety team which marking and approvals it accepts before ordering devices.
The same Zone 1 specification is designed to cover tank-entry and marine-fuel hazards alongside refinery risk. Certification is in progress and no certificate exists. Confirm the exact area, gas group and permit rules with the yard's safety officer before any use.
