Climate
Houston has a humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and exposure to Gulf hurricanes and flooding, which shapes outdoor work and turnaround planning.
Houston has a humid subtropical climate, with highs of at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit on an average of 106.5 days a year and winds from the south and southeast carrying Gulf moisture. Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas arise at process units, tank farms and loading docks along the channel. Distribution partners for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Houston and the Houston Ship Channel has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Houston. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Houston has a humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and exposure to Gulf hurricanes and flooding, which shapes outdoor work and turnaround planning.
The channel is roughly 50 miles long and is described as the second-largest petrochemical complex in the world. Port Houston operates eight public facilities along it.
Houston is 165 miles east of Austin, 88 miles west of the Louisiana border and 250 miles south of Dallas, which makes it a natural road hub for Gulf Coast plants.
Greater Houston had about 7.8 million residents at the 2020 census and is recognised worldwide for oil and gas, giving contractors and engineers a very deep local labour pool.
The Houston Ship Channel is 530 feet wide, 45 feet deep and 50 miles long, and has been deepened repeatedly to take larger ships.
The channel and surrounding area support the second-largest petrochemical complex in the world, built because of the nearby Texas oilfields.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Houston and the Houston Ship Channel. Classified areas here include refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms and dock or terminal loading areas. The facility operator, not SAMS, carries out the area classification and decides which equipment may enter each zone. A supplier datasheet only helps the operator compare the marking with that classification; it does not classify anything.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms, dock and terminal loading areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Houston and the Houston Ship Channel.
Houston typically sees highs of 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more on over 100 days a year, with high humidity from the Gulf. Check a handset's stated operating range and humidity rating on its datasheet, and avoid leaving devices in closed vehicles.
The channel is lined with refineries and chemical plants, with major private complexes at Baytown and Deer Park and public terminals at the Turning Basin, Barbours Cut and Bayport. Always confirm which operator controls the specific gate you are visiting.
No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so no certificate exists. Each refinery and chemical operator along the channel sets its own contractor and equipment approvals. A buyer can evaluate the datasheet and a safe-area use now, and should confirm requirements with the site operator.
