LNG
Cheniere's Corpus Christi terminal produced first LNG from its Stage 3 expansion in December 2024, designed to add about 10 million tonnes a year.
Corpus Christi is a Texas Gulf Coast port described as the largest US gateway for crude oil exports. The city has one of the highest average wind speeds of any coastal city in North America, which is why it is a wind-sports destination and why outdoor work is often wind-exposed. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof smartphone for Corpus Christi, Texas, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Corpus Christi, Texas: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Protection concept | Flameproof (Ex d) or intrinsic safety (Ex i) | Intrinsic safety, level ib |
| Zone suitability | Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust | Design target for Zone 1 and 21 |

| Where it applies | Corpus Christi, Texas: Refinery process units, LNG liquefaction trains, LNG storage and loading | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Corpus Christi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Cheniere's Corpus Christi terminal produced first LNG from its Stage 3 expansion in December 2024, designed to add about 10 million tonnes a year.
Valero, CITGO and Flint Hills Resources each operate a refinery in the city; Flint Hills' is reported at 104,000 barrels a day.
Records show a city high temperature of 109 degrees Fahrenheit in September 2000, while winters are mild with January lows a little below 50 degrees, so heat matters more than cold for equipment.
Summers are hot and humid, June to September is the hottest period, and monthly rainfall peaks in September when the tropical storm and hurricane threat is greatest.
The Port of Corpus Christi is among the largest US ports by waterborne tonnage and is described as one of the country's leading energy export locations, mostly oil, agricultural products and general cargo.
Corpus Christi sits 130 miles southeast of San Antonio and 208 miles southwest of Houston, and about two thirds of its area is water, because the city boundary takes in Nueces Bay and Corpus Christi Bay.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Corpus Christi, Texas. On the Texas coast, 'explosion-proof' is the traditional term for equipment in Class I locations at refineries and LNG trains. Flameproof enclosures and intrinsic safety are the real concepts, and a handheld belongs to the second. LNG storage, ship loading and process areas may each receive a different concept from the operator.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lng liquefaction trains, lng storage and loading, crude and product marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, the city has some of the highest average wind speeds of North American coastal cities. Wind mainly affects ergonomics, lanyards and dropped equipment on elevated work, so a secure lanyard point and a case you can hold firmly with gloves are worth checking.
Freight normally comes through a larger Texas gateway and by road; San Antonio is 130 miles away and Houston 208 miles. Agree delivery windows with the site, since refineries and terminals often limit gate hours and require advance notice for vendors.
The port handles large volumes of crude oil and petroleum products, Cheniere's LNG terminal produced first LNG from its Stage 3 expansion in December 2024, and Valero, CITGO and Flint Hills each operate a refinery. Figures come from encyclopaedic sources. Confirm requirements with the site operator.
