Grangemouth
The refinery stopped processing crude in 2025 and is becoming a fuels import terminal, while the adjacent INEOS complex continues to run the UK's last operating ethylene cracker.
Scotland has a long oil, gas and petrochemical base. Hazardous-area work arises at the Grangemouth petrochemical complex on the Firth of Forth, the Mossmorran site in Fife and the St Fergus gas terminal in Aberdeenshire. Several of these sites are in transition. An Ex-proof smartphone distributor in Scotland would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Scotland has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Scotland. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The refinery stopped processing crude in 2025 and is becoming a fuels import terminal, while the adjacent INEOS complex continues to run the UK's last operating ethylene cracker.
Shell's Fife NGL plant separates natural gas liquids. ExxonMobil's Fife Ethylene Plant ceased production in February 2026 and is due to be decommissioned, so activity there is shifting to closure work.
Scottish waters hold the largest oil resources in Western Europe; oil was discovered in the North Sea in 1966 and the first year of full production was 1976.
Hydrocarbon production is expected to fall to about a third of 2019 levels by 2035, and a global decommissioning market of around 67 billion pounds over ten years is forecast, so abandonment work is growing.
Shipbuilding remains significant, generating 403 million pounds of gross value added in 2022, alongside oil and gas, food and drink, energy and manufacturing among Scotland's primary industries.
A 58-mile pipeline from the Finnart oil terminal on Loch Long to Grangemouth has operated since the 1950s, and the Kinneil terminal stabilised North Sea Forties crude from 1975.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Scotland. A marking check would differ between sites. Ethylene and natural gas liquids handling at Grangemouth and Mossmorran suggests conservative IIC marking, while St Fergus handles natural gas. The operator's zone documents govern. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, still pending certification.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Scotland. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are petrochemical process units, natural gas liquids plant, gas terminals, fuel import and storage terminal. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Scotland.
Offshore and coastal sites face wind, rain, salt spray and cold, and winter weather can disrupt crew changes. For handheld devices check ingress protection, corrosion resistance, glove-friendly controls and low-temperature battery behaviour, and ask the platform or terminal for its own requirements.
Aberdeen and the north-east are the centre of offshore oil and gas support, with other activity at the Grangemouth industrial area on the Firth of Forth, east-coast and Shetland terminals, shipyards, distilleries and offshore wind bases. Zoning is site-specific, so ask each operator for classification drawings.
The Grangemouth refinery stopped processing crude in 2025 and is becoming a fuels import terminal, and ExxonMobil's Fife Ethylene Plant ceased production in February 2026 and is due to be decommissioned. Work may therefore shift towards closure and conversion, so ask operators which contractors and requirements apply.
