Environment
The climate is hot and arid, and sites are spread over long distances, so vehicle-based access is normal.
Midland, Odessa and San Angelo serve as headquarters for much of the basin's oil production activity, so most contractors and service firms are based there. Zone 1 work arises at drilling rigs, wellsites, tank batteries, compressor stations and gas plants. If you are specifying an Ex-proof mobile phone for Permian Basin, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Permian Basin: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Permian Basin. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The climate is hot and arid, and sites are spread over long distances, so vehicle-based access is normal.
The basin averaged 4.2 million barrels of crude a day in 2019 and has Midland and Delaware sub-basins separated by the Central Basin Platform.
The wider Permian Basin accounts for nearly 40 percent of United States oil production and nearly 15 percent of its natural gas, according to figures cited by the Texas Railroad Commission.
The Permian Basin is about 250 miles wide and 300 miles long, spans West Texas and southeastern New Mexico and is made up of more than 7,000 fields.
The first commercial well in the basin came in at the Westbrook Field in Mitchell County in 1921, at a depth of about 2,500 feet.
The basin averaged about 4.2 million barrels of crude a day in 2019, making it the highest-producing oil field in the United States.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Permian Basin. At a compressor station or gas plant, a marking check would read zone, gas group and temperature class against the operator's classification. The IS-04Z1 target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 for Zone 1 gas. The operator, not the device supplier, decides whether that marking is accepted at a specific facility.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are drilling rigs, wellsites and tank batteries, compressor stations, gas processing plants. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
It covers roughly 86,000 square miles across West Texas and New Mexico, so travel between sites can be long. Plan around the main service hubs of Midland and Odessa, and confirm the exact location and gate rules for each facility.
Wellpads, tank batteries, gas processing plants and compressor stations can all contain flammable gas and vapour. The operator classifies each location, and you should obtain the area drawings and approval requirements before taking any device there.
Yes, producers and service companies normally set their own equipment requirements. The Railroad Commission of Texas regulates oil and gas, but it does not approve handsets. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Confirm requirements with the site operator before any field trial.
