Refining
Motiva's Port Arthur refinery reached 600,000 barrels a day in 2012, and the company describes its refinery as North America's largest. Motiva has been wholly owned by Saudi Aramco since 2017.
Port Arthur lies on the Sabine-Neches waterway in the Texas Golden Triangle and is centred on oil refining and petrochemicals. Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas arise at refinery process units, petrochemical plants and marine terminals. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx mobile phone for Port Arthur, Texas, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Motiva's Port Arthur refinery reached 600,000 barrels a day in 2012, and the company describes its refinery as North America's largest. Motiva has been wholly owned by Saudi Aramco since 2017.
Valero completed a petrochemical expansion in the city. Golden Pass LNG at nearby Sabine Pass, Texas, reported its first export cargo on 22 April 2026.
The TotalEnergies refinery completed the largest turnaround in its history in 2023, which shows how large the periodic shutdown work is on these complexes.
Other investments in the city include Valero's 775 million dollar petrochemical plant expansion and a 1.75 billion dollar gasification and cogeneration unit at the BASF and Fina site.
TotalEnergies' Port Arthur platform has a crude processing capacity of 238,000 barrels a day and dates from 1936, with a coker added in 2011 to handle heavy crude.
An ethane cracker with a capacity of 1 million tonnes of ethylene a year, built by the Baystar joint venture for about 2 billion US dollars, was inaugurated at Port Arthur in 2022.
ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.
For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.
In Port Arthur, Texas. Port Arthur's refining and petrochemical operators include globally owned companies, so a procurement reviewer may expect certificate evidence that is portable across their international sites. A dual ATEX and IECEx route is designed for that. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, and no certificate has been issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, petrochemical plants, tank farms, marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The city is about 90 miles east of Houston, the usual gateway, and lies on the west side of Sabine Lake. Confirm customs and site delivery arrangements with your freight forwarder and the plant's receiving contact.
Process units, tank farms, loading jetties and crackers all have classified areas for flammable gas and vapour, and the operator defines their extent. Request the area classification drawings and the site's equipment rules before any visit.
Motiva's website refers to supplier resources and an SAP Ariba platform, so formal onboarding is likely at large operators. Equipment approval is a separate matter. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Confirm requirements with the site operator before approaching procurement.
